Bent's Fort diary, [1855] Jul 9-Sept 4.

Manuscript diary in pencil kept by Little during an 1855 military expedition led by Lieut. Col. Pitcairn Morrison to Bent's Fort, Colorado. Little records the regiment's encounter with gold miners on the banks of the Little Arkansas River, Kan. and a subseqent meeting with a group of Indians whom Little identifies as "Kansas" or Kiowa. He describes the regiment's buffalo hunts during their march West, as well as several meetings with various parties: William Bent, Major Israel Richardson's troops, and Apache, Kiowa and Cheyenne Indians. Arriving at Bent's Fort on August 11, Little records daily life in detail, including relations between the encamped Indian population, the resident Indian agent and the troops. He also describes the social life of the encamped Indians and records observations of a "war dance".

Lewis Henry Little was born in Baltimore, Md. on March 19, 1817. A veteran of the Mexican War, he resigned from the United States Army in 1861 to join the army of the Confederacy. After serving at the battle of Elkhorn, he was promoted to brigadier general on April 16, 1862. He was killed on September 19, 1862 during the Battle of Iuka in Mississippi.
